N.C. murder suspect shot dead after ‘ambushing’ officers at police station

Jan. 12 (UPI) — A man wanted in the death of his girlfriend was shot dead Thursday after North Carolina authorities say he attempted to ambush officers at police headquarters.

Police said the man, Jonathan Bennett, “started shooting at officers outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department late Thursday night — striking one officer in the leg.

Officials said Bennett, 23, was shot by return fire, and died from his wounds.

The shooting happened as a group of officers were being briefed on an unrelated investigation in the station’s parking lot.

Police said Bennett pulled up in a car and started firing, shooting at least a dozen shots. The injured officer was hospitalized, but her wound is not life-threatening.

Bennett was suspected of killing 23-year-old Brittany White earlier Thursday. The couple were parents of an infant daughter, who police say Bennett took with him after White’s death. The 2-month-old girl was located and taken into protective custody.

Authorities said Bennett had a lengthy criminal record that includes breaking and entering, eluding arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, trespassing, assault and battery, resisting an officer and larceny.

According to court records, Bennett was due to stand trial next month for a felony probation violation.
